I helped to raise money for childhood cancer research with: Rancho

In March of 2008 my brother Michael, baseball legend Rod Carew, and 64 other local residents volunteered to be “shavee’s” at our community’s first annual Saint Baldrick’s fundraiser (St. Baldrick's is about shaving your head in solidarity of children who lose their hair during cancer treatment). It was a fun event and Michael couldn’t wait to do it again! Later that year our classmate Kabrina was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Her illness inspired me to create a team for the 2009 event. In 2010 we found out another dear student Riley had been diagnosed with cancer too. Her illness inspired me to take our team to the next level. That year I set up booths at local little league opening days to spread awareness about St Baldricks and recruit Shavees. It was a wonderful success. That year our family was featured on the Emmy winning show the Doctors. In 2011 Maddy's friend and fellow Nadadore Jessie Rees was diagnosed with cancer. Jessie recently lost her battle, but we are more inspired than ever to try to make a difference. Each year it has been a special experience for our family. Last year we had over 50 shavees including my dad and many students at Rancho Viejo and baseball players from Tijeras Creek Little League! Many families have multiple members who shave year in and year out! So inspiring! If you play little league look for me at opening day! I’ll be the one wearing green and handing out flyers! This year my goal is to invite as many students and little leaguers as possible to spend April 1st at the RSM Bell Tower shaving the way to beat childhood cancer. If you would like to join our team or donate please go to: http://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/Rancho If you are unable to be a shave, please consider volunteering, donating or spreading the word. Thank you for helping us Shave the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer! If you have questions please call me! Bald is Beautiful!
