Hi everybody,
I am proud to be participating in our 8th Annual St. Baldrick's event and my LAST one here at OHCHS since we're moving this summer to Ocala! In the past seven years, we have raised nearly $300,000, and already we have surpassed that this year. Our goal is to get to 1/3 of a million dollars this year in funds raised for children's cancer research. I am proud to have brought St. Baldrick's to Olympic Heights 8 years ago and amazed by the success we have had since that time, truly one of the most significant accomplishments of my life! We are proud to be part of the world wide St. Baldrick's effort ever since the 2005, and the philanthropy had only started in the year 2000.
This year, I am sad to say that I will be shaving my head in MEMORY of my sister, Robin Bentley. For the past two years, I have shaved in HONOR of her, and I have shaved my head with her during her battle against ovarian cancer. As trite as it might sound, it is absolutely true, that my sister is a hero to me. The grace and courage with which she fought is truly awesome. I am pretty sure that I would not have had the strength of will, which she possessed, while continuing to have a happy disposition and self-deprecating humor about the ravages of the disease. Robin never lost her trademark sense of humor, and I will remember her always for the fortitude that she possessed in that final stretch. "I love you and miss you, my dear sister, and sadly, I have to say, 'this ones for you'.... I just wish you were here with me still."
Our children also have been impacted by horrific diseases, which also ravage their bodies, but with less of the intellectual capacity to know and understand WHY. That's why I will continue to fight for them this year and in the future. Thanks for your help in this worthy endeavor!
Sincerely, Renee Manwaring
