Hi, my name is Mencius and I’m a fat 5-year-old guinea pig who’s ready for Fat Tuesday. I’m also a cancer survivor and have been in remission for 7 months. My doctor was up to date on the latest therapies for my cancer which could not have been possible without research into new treatments that helped save my life.
My mom says this is very similar to childhood cancer in that we need more research for better therapies, which she is very passionate about. Adult (and guinea pig) cancers are different from childhood cancers due to having a unique biology and a different response to treatment. Childhood cancer is also distinctive in that we need to learn how to minimize long lasting side effects of treatments in growing bodies. If there is not enough funding for childhood cancer it can harm future generations of children leaving them with fewer treatment options and potentially costing lives.
Until there are no longer children developing these diseases it is important to continue to fund research for childhood cancer.
