As we thought about what we can do to raise money for St. Baldricks, we are thinking about what it means to take part in a rite of passage as a ceremony that marks a milestone event. Hair loss during cancer means the chemotherapy is doing its job….it’s killing the bad cells in these little kids’ bodies…..it just happens to be killing their “good” hair cells at the same time. But for us it’s just hair. Just vanity. Just femininity. And just temporary.
Today, we am fortunate to write this message as a bystander to cancer. Not only has it not directly touched our lives, but it hasn’t touched our family’s life.
And yet.
And yet we are also acutely aware that we need to express that gratitude for today because tomorrow it could be one of us. It could be Riggs...Ella...Cal...Lily...or any one of your children.
So we're in. Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in this world” and here we are - ready for change. We will BOTH shave our heads of these long locks in a heartbeat if it means we can raise a significant amount of money for St. Baldricks so we never have to wonder which loved one is next to get touched by cancer. What is that number for us? $15,000.
We pledge to shave my head at the St. Baldricks Growler Tournament and we want to raise at least $15,000.00 OR MORE by August 21, 2018.
We think about the children who are going through the scariest thing of their lives, and we realize what an opportunity we have been given to share this milestone in a small way with them...to stand with them in solidarity and support their journey toward a cure.
We are asking for 150 people we know to step up and give $100 each or 300 people to give $50 or give what you would have spent on your Starbucks this month. We know it’s a lot. We know we all give to various organizations that impact each of our lives. But this year, we're asking for you to share this journey with us and make this organization yours too.
What can you give for the kids?
