I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I'm back! The last time I shaved was in 2013. I chose not to shave last year because of the wedding....see the picture? Well, now that is over, I am excited to be at the shaving thing again. You might be asking, "Why did you start shaving?" Well, it all began back in 2008. I was volunteering at Doernbecher's children's hospital in Portland, OR. I volunteered in the emergency department. One night, we had a teen come in who was fighting cancer. These are always the hardest situations in the ED because it is difficult to entertain a teen and much of what we use to entertain teens, patients with a compromised immune system cannot use. This situation was particularly hard because the teen came to the ED because they no longer wanted to fight- they were on suicide watch. The cancer they had been fighting, had come back. They were devastated. My heart broke to see this happening. I could not change that specific situation, but I can help bring hope to others through shaving. All of us are touched by cancer at some point in our personal lives. If we are "lucky", it is with adults that we love. It is heart breaking to see kiddos go through cancer. Many of the treatments for the kiddos are just lowered doses of adult treatments, which increases the risk of cancer decades down the road for the kiddos. So much more research needs to be done. Please consider supporting me and bringing hope to kiddos and their adults! Thanks!
