Why am I shaving my head, and why should you care?
You never know what you learn when you meet new people. A new friend of mine mentioned in passing about an organization which raises money for finding a cure for childhood cancer. With so many charities out there, one never knows who to trust. If I am going to donate money - or help fund raise for a "good cause", I want to know that my money is actually going to the cause...not just 20 cents on the dollar, with most of the money going to "administration".
I am a supporter of St. Jude, and I remember the original founder, Danny Thomas and now his daughter, Marlo. (By the way, I had a huge crush on her back in the day :)
I found out that St. Jude is actually one of the organizations that St. Baldrick's supports! Even better, 94 cents of every dollar goes to funding / charity of every dollar!!!!
For me, shaving my head is a little scary. I am the guy who had the long mullet. I am the guy who was called Elvis because my hair was always perfect. I am the guy who is over 50 and still dying his hair. As nervous as I am, I can't imagine children who are going thru their treatment - and don't have a choice - let alone, they are just hoping to stay alive.
Please - help me help those who don't have a choice, and are just TRYING TO STAY ALIVE, hoping for a future where they will have the things that we take for granted...a life, a home, a job, a family....and of course...maybe hair!!
Feel free to stop at the Brat Stop on March 1st. There will be raffles, baked goods, and activities. Who knows, maybe you will get a video of my crying!
Below is the history of St. Baldrick's, as well as some facts:
A challenge among friends 25 years ago has become the largest volunteer movement to Conquer Kids’ Cancer. This year, I’m joining thousands of others to shave my head to raise money for childhood cancer research!
Did you know, 1 in 5 kids diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. won’t survive? For those who do, more than 96% have severe or life-threatening conditions by the time they are 50.
Each shaved head, every dollar donated, creates a ripple effect of progress for kids with cancer.
Your gift will give kids and their families hope, supporting the best research across the country, through the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
Together, let’s give these kids the lifetime they deserve. Thank you for your support!
