My father died in 1981 from complications due to colon cancer. I was 26, not much older than the college students who organized this fundraising event. Since then, I've lost four close friends to this disease--Simon (bladder cancer), Stan (adrenal cancer), Donna (breast cancer), Kay (pancreatic cancer). My sister's wonderful husband, Milt, went through chemo and a stem cell transplant and months of being isolated from the world in his battle against Hodgkins lymphoma. Thankfully, he's cancer free. Now my best friend, Malena, is battling multiple myeloma (blood cancer), and I just found out that another friend, Bill, has prostate cancer.
If you would have asked me if I thought I'd have a personal relationship with cancer, I would have said, "I can't imagine it." Now, I can. Yet, thankfully, I've never known a child with cancer, and I hope I never do.
In honor, and in memory, of the friends and family we each know, and especially for the infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers, please donate generously to conquer this insidious disease, so future generations really can't imagine it. Thank you.
