This is the 10th time I'm shaving my head in memory of Julia Janes. I started participating in 2013 after Julia passed away from secondary Leukemia. She was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma at 16 years old, conquered it, and returned to high school to graduate on time and continue on to college. She was 20 years old when she passed away. I regret not shaving my head in her honor while she was alive, but I proudly continue to shave in her memory, raising tens of thousands of dollars for Julia's Legacy of Hope and her St. Baldricks Hero Fund. You can read more about Julia's story on the hero fund page https://www.stbaldricks.org/hero-funds/juliaslegacyofhope/
It's completely unfair that children and young adults are receiving treatments meant for adult bodies and face the consequences long after they beat their primary cancer. That's where St. Baldricks comes in. They are the second largest funder of pediatric cancer research in the country, only topped by the US government. But in a world where government funding and support is precarious at best and pediatric cancer research funds account for less than 4% of all cancer research funding, we have to step up our support for St. Baldricks now more than ever.
In honor of this being the 10th time I'm shaving my head, I set an extremely aggressive fundraising goal - $10,000. I need your support - financially and emotionally! If you're able to donate, that's incredible!! If you're not able to contribute financially, there are many other ways to pitch in! Sharing my page with your network or directly with someone you think may be likely to donate goes a long way. If you see any of my posts on social media, please interact with them! Not only am I raising money to fund research, but we're also increasing awareness about the discrepancies between treatments for adults and the AYA populations of cancer patients.
