Here is my proposal: I'll shave my head (again)...IF you make a donation to childhood cancer research!
.
In 2014, one of my 2nd grade students was undergoing chemotherapy. Her hair was falling out, but she didn’t want to shave it. I remember wanting to let her know her fears were valid, yet, her hair would grow back and being bald could even be pretty cool.
.
I signed up for St. Baldrick’s, a childhood cancer fundraiser where participants shave their heads to raise money for children’s cancer research.
.
Since then, my husband, my dad, and best friends have faced cancer. I’ve often thought about fundraising for St. Baldrick’s again, but now I feel truly called to do it—for Lola and for every child fighting this disease.
.
Lola is my daughter’s friend and our neighbor. At just 7 years old, she is in the fight. Because her hair loss is already beginning, the shaving event is time-sensitive! I can't join an existing event nor fundraise very long, but I would love to hold a small event.
.
I’d like to be a “shavee,” and my daughter has already decided to be a “trimee,” meaning she’ll donate a ponytail-width of hair to Children With Hair Loss. Lola's mom has plans to get a haircut, too! I have created “Team Lola” so that anyone else, anywhere, could join us virtually by sending photos or video of themselves shaving or trimming their hair in her honor of Lola--while raising money for childhood cancer research.
.
To make it as fun as possible, my favorite hair stylist is on board to help. We hope to find some “K-pop demon hunter” type wigs, play around with different styles, and try to make the best of a truly hard situation.
