Last night, our beautiful daughter Maggie decided to wake us up about once every 20 minutes with the loudest, most blood-curdling scream we've heard. She wasn't hungry and her diaper was clean. She didn't seem sick. Just senseless screaming.
We couldn't be mad at her. Well, we were mad at her, but it didn't really make sense. You see, she didn't make the choice to scream. She doesn't have that ability yet. She's a baby.
And with her inability to make decisions comes her inability to make questionable decisions. She cannot screw over a coworker to advance her career. She cannot delve into a life of unprotected sex and illicit drug use. She cannot decide to smoke a pack per day.
So, when a kid gets cancer, either as a result of second hand smoke, or just crappy genetics, they're essentially paying the bill at a restaurant they've never been to, and someone ordered the caviar.
We can all agree that cancer, whichever flavor is currently wracking the life of you or a loved one, is not okay. It's painful and removes important people from your life if given a chance. How horrible is it that this can affect a person before they've decided what they want from their life?
I've set a goal to raise another $700 in three days before the event. The world will always be quick to tell you that money is the root of all evil. This money is not evil. This money helps stop evil.
To those who have already donated: thank you. Your contribution means more than you'll ever know. To those who are still on the sidelines: please get off the bench and get in the game. It doesn't even take a lot to help. Whatever you can manage.
We need you now. Yes YOU. You're not reading a message meant for someone else. If you're reading this message, then it is meant for you.
