Why am I shaving my head, and why should you care?
This is my 8th year shaving my head for St. Baldrick's. Way back in P1, I had just joined Saltus in January when they announced their St. Baldrick's event in March. I had never heard of St. Baldrick's, but I asked Mum what it was all about and she explained that they were raising money to help kids with cancer - St. Baldrick's used the money to research cures and treat kids who were really sick.
I had just turned 5 at the time, and was really into football (soccer for my American friends) and I was really upset that kids could be so sick that they couldn't play football with their friends. Something had to be done to help them, so I signed up for my first St. Baldrick's, because EVERYONE should be able to play football (if they want) and cancer shouldn't be allowed to stop them!
Since then I have participated in a St. Baldrick's event every year, including the Covid years, when instead of being able to celebrate with my friends, we had to do everything online, a virtual headshaving party. In that time with the support of my family and friends (and quite a few awesome people I have never actually met), I have raised $14,950 to help kids with cancer, but there is still so much more to do.
Did you know, 1 in 5 kids diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. won’t survive? For those who do, more than 96% have severe or life-threatening conditions by the time they are 50.
Each shaved head, every dollar donated, creates a ripple effect of progress for kids with cancer.
Your gift will give kids and their families hope, supporting the best research across the country, through the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
Together, let’s give these kids the lifetime they deserve. Thank you for your support!
