I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: UC Davis Children's Hospital - Kick Kids' Cancer to the Curb!!

Just about every day at work I get to spend some time with a child who is fighting cancer. Almost. Every. Day. In Peds Anesthesia, we are afforded the privilege of helping these kiddos as they come in for their initial imaging, biopsies, resection, line placements, re-imaging, lumbar punctures and chemotherapy, bone marrow biopsies... all kinds of horrendous things. One of the best parts of my job is getting to know these warriors, from tiny infants to teens, and their families, over months to years.

I am humbled by their conscious and unconscious bravery. Their matter of fact approach to unspeakable discomfort. Their capacity to handle loss of control, and to cope with laughter. Or tantrums. Or hugs. Coping in any way seems miraculous. I admire the habits of French fries in the Recovery Room. The ritual of falling under anesthesia while in dad's arms, or while singing Taylor Swift, or while telling ribald locker-room jokes while Mom cracks up in the corner. I celebrate out loud when one completes their treatment and gets their port out, or rings the bell in Rad Onc. I grieve when one of our beloved loses the fight. Too many angels.

So, I'm shaving my head. It seems radical. Unnecessary. A little unexpected for a woman physician. ATTENTION SEEKING. I sure as hell HOPE so!!!! In reality, compared to the enormous sacrifice these kids make with their families, it's a small gesture. An homage to the brave battling fear, the determined fighting fatigue. I make this gesture in the hope of raising awareness, and money, to help develop better therapies. To advance the science, and to help win the battles.

Childhood cancer research is woefully underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures. Now I need your help! Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.
