My Story

AJ wasn't himself for a few weeks. Symptoms were varied, and ebbed and flowed - petechiae rash, low fever, exhaustion, paleness, loss of appetite. We had blood tested the evening of July 10, 2019. The lab called our pediatrician at home at 9, he called me around 9:15pm to tell me AJ's levels were dangerously low and he had no immune system. The next day we saw a hematologist/oncologist at the Keyser Pediatric Cancer Center.

Friday, July 12, 2019, we were back in the Keyser Center for a bone marrow aspiration. After the procedure, we were told to go for lunch and head home. A few hours later, the doctor called me. He said to pack a bag and head back to the hospital. I asked if AJ has leukemia and he said we just need to come in. I told the doctor that I wasn't going anywhere until he told me what was going on. I said I needed to know. I asked again if it is leukemia and he quietly said that yes, it is.
