My Story

Matthew was a very caring kid who loved all his friends and his community. Matthew was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia 2 weeks before his 2nd Birthday. He endured 2.5 years of treatment and remained in remission for 23 months. Unfortunately he relapsed and the A.L.L. returned in his bone marrow and spinal fluid. The doctors got him back in remission and he then had a bone marrow transplant. Life was good for 6 years then. Matthew showed no evidence of disease. He was a proud member of the West Babylon Fire Department’s Youth Education Program aka a Junior Fireman. All he talked about was becoming a member when he turned 18. He loved his community. He had many friends. In the fall of 2000, Matthew started having severe headaches. A cat scan of his brain revealed the unthinkable, Matt had a brain tumor. He underwent a craniotomy, radiation therapy, and chemo therapy for a High Grade Astrocytoma, but; the cancer was to aggressive. Matthew got his wings on 4/8/2002. He left such an imprint on all his teachers before he passed that every year West Babylon Senior High School holds a Holiday Toy Drive in his memory. This year The West Babylon School District is hosting their 2nd St. Baldrick’s event in honor of Matthew.
