My Story

Cohen was diagnosed with Leukemia just six days shy of his 4th Birthday. We noticed he was not himself and my motherly instinct after a few days wanted him checked out. We went to our pediatrician whom was also puzzled at what might be going on and ordered a blood and urine test. That very day within two hours of the blood draw on July 14th, 2014 we got the news it was abnormal and possibly Leukemia. My whole world stopped around me and I thought I was dreaming, a bad, bad, bad dream. I could hardly take down the address of the Hospital I was in such shock. The entire 2.5hr trip I stared at my sick boy wondering what we did wrong to deserve this, wondering if he was going to survive, hoping the doctor was wrong, I prayed for the first time and as hard as I could for God and our Guardian Angel's to look out for him. He got his port placed on the 15th and looking out his hospital window we saw a double rainbow. We knew then that God and our Guardian Angel's were with us. Cohen knew how to swallow pills better than any adult at the young age of 4. He endured many port accesses, spinal taps, blood draws, and infusions of chemo, nausea medication, antibiotics and blood products. I did not keep track of how many days we had to stay in the hospital or had to take a midnight trip to the ER for a fever of a minimum 100.4 to receive antibiotics and do some tests hoping not to get admitted. We learned a lot on this journey mentally, physically, emotionally even medically. The biggest thing that helped us get through was the outpouring love and support from our family and friends and surrounding neighbors. We are forever grateful for the doctors and nurses that face multiple pediatric cancer cases each and every day. These individuals besides the parents are the strongest people I know.
