Gabby is 21 yo college senior, graduating from UC Santa Cruz in June ‘26. She completed treatment for osteosarcoma in July 2018 after being diagnosed on 11/7/17 after complaining of knee pain. She started her 1st of 18 rounds of chemo on 11/10/17 and completed chemo on 7/21/18. On 12/16/17 she had a limb salvage surgery of her left leg. The tumor, her knee and 6” of her femur were removed and replaced with titanium. It took Gabby 18 mo to learn to walk again after her initial surgery. She is still dealing with the permanent side effects of chemo — hearing loss, heart damage, and a few other health issues. Although she has been cancer free for almost 8 years she still sees a handful of doctors yearly (orthopedic oncology, cardiology, audiology, gastrology and neurology) and will continue doing so for the rest of her life. Better treatments not only means better survival rates but also the chance for fewer, less permanent side effects.
