My Story

Thank you for joining Meg and the St. Baldrick's Foundation in the fight against childhood cancer. Your support -- either by making a donation or raising funds and awareness -- is critical to helping St. Balderick's fulfill its mission to fund research and support children with cancer and their families. Meg was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the tender age of 6 in September of 2012 and completed her treatment in May 2013. She had limb-salvage surgery in December 2012, where her her entire femur was removed in order to get take out the tumor. She has a Stanmore total femur endoprosthesis and is continually monitored for ongoing orthopedic complications. We are grateful and relieved that Meg remains cancer-free, but we will hold our collective breath until she hits the all-important five-year milestone But please hear me: Cancer is not a one-time event for a child. While Meg's treatment appears to have been effective at getting rid of the cancer (thank you, Lord!), she will be monitored for very serious side effects for the rest of her life, including heart failure and secondary cancers. And while Meg walks like a champ, she has orthopedic limitations and challenges that will likely mean many more surgeries in her lifetime. All of these are after-effects of cancer. Please support St. Baldrick's and kids like Meg everywhere by giving generously. RESEARCH holds the key to curing childhood cancer, and the government just doesn't allocate enough funding toward these particular diseases. We need groups like St. Baldrick's to fill the gap. Thank you, and may God richly bless you and yours. Rhonda and Carl Routh
