My Story

On July 15, 2008 our lives would forever be changed- our son Luke at the age of 2 was diagnosed with Stage IV Wilms tumor with lung metastasis at Wolsons Childrens Hospital in Jacksonville FL. Luke began chemotherapy once a week for 6 weeks in attempt to shrink the tumor because at the time of diagnosis it was unable to be surgically removed due to its size and placement. His scans showed after 6 weeks that the tumor was smaller, but still wrapped around his vena cava. The plan was Luke to continue 6 more weeks of chemotherapy and then rescan. At this point the tumor and lung nodules had not gotten any smaller. The doctors decided Luke needed to be placed on a more aggressive chemotherapy treatment that required him to go into the clinic for 5 days in a row for eight hours at a time. A miracle happened after this first round of new chemotherapy- the tumor was no longer on the vena cava and able to be resected! Following a lengthy surgery Luke endured 9 rounds of chest and abdominal radiation- and more courses of intense chemotherapy. He was hospitalized several times for fever, neutropenia and low oxygen saturation. Although his weight dwindled, his spirit never did. In March 2009 Luke finished his last chemotherapy treatment, and in April 2009 was deemed No Evidence of Disease. He continues his scans every three months... Today he is 23 months out of treatment and is a healthy four year old. He loves going to school, playing with his friends, soccer and swimming. He idolizes Superman, but to his family and friends he is our real life Superhero!
