My Story

Austin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on January 20th, 2010 after his pediatrician sent him for x-rays and lab work due to hip pain and a fever. Even though he was considered "standard risk," he had many side effects from his chemotherapy, including, a broken leg due to low bone density, not being able to eat and low blood sugars that required a surgically placed feeding tube, a very large blood clot in his heart that required surgery to remove, and numerous fevers from his compromised immune system. Austin has 1162 days of chemotherapy, and went off-treatment on March 26th, 2013. Austin just completed kindergarten and other then catching many winter viruses and Strep, he is doing well off-treatment. He loves riding his bike, reading, maps, bridges, weather, swinging, and playing with his brother and friends. Although Austin is doing well off treatment, we know that he wouldn't be here today, had it not been for the research of the last few decades. We saw many children along Austin's journey that were not as fortunate. Now, it is our turn to give back, so that we see more cures, better treatments, and fewer children's funerals. Please honor Austin and help to save the lives of our precious children. Please read more about Austin's journey on his Caringbridge site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/austindaniel
