My Story

Your youngest son Kenny I Smith Jr. (KJ) was hospitalized for months with unknown causes of high fevers, low blood counts, skin breakdown and enlarged spleen and liver. After being transported from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia both my husband and my prayers were answered we finally had a actually diagnose. He has LCH (Langerhans cell histiocytosis); LCH is the most common of the histiocytic disorders and occurs when the body accumulates too many immature Langerhans cells, a subset of the larger family of cells known as histiocytes. Langerhans cells are a type of white blood cell that normally help the body fight infection. In LCH, too many Langerhans cells are produced and build up in certain parts of the body where they can form tumors or damage organs. LCH is believed to occur in 1:200,000 children. Kj has undergone 7 cycles of chemotherapy and his body is slowly accepting the treatment. Although he is making head-way, there is still a long road ahead before he is back to our little Kj. We are blessed and continue to pray for his continued success with his treatment.
