On Saturday 14 June, Kerri Kanuga will hit the open waters of Key West to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. She will be participating in the KFCC Swim Around Key West, an event she entered after breaking her toe and having to withdraw from the Keys100 mile endurance run. This swim is a 12.5 mile endurance swim in the open waters around Key West. The race is one of the longest marathon swimming events in the world and Kerri will be completing the race solo and in the open water for over 10 hours.
Kerri is no stranger to the open seas - She has completed numerous long-distance swims including being one of the first to navigate a staged swim around the entire coastline of Grand Cayman (that included a crossing of the North Sound) and a double-crossing of the Cayman Brac/Little Cayman channel which took her over the Cayman Trough (some of the deepest water in the world with depths of 25,000 ft). The Swim Around Key West will be her furthest sea swim challenge yet.
Kerri is swimming in honor of Hannah Meeson who has been bravely battling Medulloblastoma since 2012. Like so many of us, Kerri has been affected by cancer, losing many friends and family members including her father last year. Until recently Kerri knew very little about childhood cancer and was shocked by the statistics surrounding the lack of funding and research and the debilitating side effects of current treatments for children. Hannah and her family have inspired Kerri to combine her passion for life and her love of endurance sports, to raise much needed funds and awareness.
Kerri hopes that her efforts will aid research into preventing the life long damage that results from surgeries, radiation and chemotherapies given while young bodies and brains are just developing. A cure is not enough.
Please support Kerri and help change the face of childhood cancer forever.
