OKCRD's Tornado Alley Rollergirls Pair with St. Baldricks for Childrens Cancer Fundraiser.
Roller derby like, all competitive sports, is tough and sometimes brutal; but add scissors and it can get ugly. Dont believe me? Find out for yourself!
Join Oklahoma City Roller Derby (OKCRD) on Sunday, March 21 at the Farmers Market (311 Klein in OKC) for their second bout of the season as the ladies shave their heads to demonstrate solidarity of children with cancer. Even though the haircut itself wont be too stylish, the Tornado Alley Roller girls (TARG) will be skating with class while making positive changes within their community.
This bout is especially important for a number of women because of the way cancer has impacted their lives. Money donated to the skaters for shaving their heads will go to St. Baldricks, the worlds largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research.
Since 2000, St. Baldricks has raised more than $50 million for the cause of childhood cancer research and more than $17 million in 2008 alone. Every year, more than 160,000 children around the world are diagnosed with cancer, and TARG wants to do their part to help find a cure.
Roller Derby is an event that is enjoyable for the entire family. The half-time show is not the only part of the bouts to look forward to. These hard-hitting women are truly competitive and will keep you entertained from the rollergating in the parking lot til the last buzzer. Beer, merchandise vendors and tickets bought at the door accept cash only. Tickets at the door are $12. Advance tickets can be purchased online at OKCtickets.com or from your favorite roller girl for $10.
Rollergating starts in the parking lot at 5 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m. The bout begins at 7p.m. and will consist of two 30-minute halves with the head shavings taking place during halftime.
