Hi! We are shaving our heads to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So We decided to do something about it by raising money for cures.
This year is the second year Zachery Hupp (a 4th grade student in Mrs. Heeckt’s class) and Evan Hupp (a 1st grade student in Mrs. Pastor’s class) have decided they are fundraising in honor of 11 year old Anya La Mar, who on 12/28/16 earned her angel wings following her heroic battle with Ewing's sarcoma. Anya is cousin of our very own, Mr. Ryan Hardesty, a teacher at Highland Middle School.
Although this is the first year Evan is shaving, Zachery is very proud that this is his 5th consecutive year! For Zachery it all started in 2014 when he heard about the St. Baldrick’s Foundation while listening to the radio. He became very sad to learn that kids were suffering from cancer and that so many of them have or will lose their battle so young. He stepped up to the plate and donated $40 and shaved his head in solidarity with those who don’t have a choice in being bald. In 2015 he was back at it raising $225, in 2016 he raised $842 at this point he was gaining attention from other students within Blackhawk. The Beat wrote and article about Zachery and his amazing fundraising efforts and the School Board, along with Dr. Kerber recognized him at a school board meeting. As you can imagine 2017 was even a better fundraising year for Zachery, he raised a whopping $1443! Very proud of their own the school board, Dr. Postupac, and Mr. Hardesty brought Zachery back into a board meeting to recognize him again!
Zachery and Evan formed the team “Hupp, Hupp & Away” and they have set their fundraising goal collectively at $2,500. New this year they are selling St. Baldrick’s t-shirts. Please consider supporting them and order a t-shirt today!
