Team Campbell Foundation and St. Baldrick’s Foundation Partner to Fund Childhood Cancer Research

Bernardsville, NJ (October 23, 2017) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, is proud to announce that it has partnered with the Team Campbell Foundation in Bernardsville, New Jersey, to support the best research to find cures and better treatments for kids’ cancers.

This year, with generous support from the Team Campbell Foundation, a $100,000 St. Baldrick’s Research Grant, has been awarded to Loren Walensky, M.D., Ph.D., at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children’s Hospital of Boston. Dr. Walenksy is testing a novel therapeutic strategy for pediatric high-grade gliomas (HGG) based on chemically reactivating one of the most powerful natural tumor suppressors in nature. He believes that the proof-of-concept data his research group obtains could provide a rationale for conducting a clinical trial in these otherwise rapidly fatal pediatric brain cancers.

Progress will only be made with the innovative research sponsored by St. Baldrick’s,” said Robin Hoyt, mother of Campbell Hoyt. “We are so grateful to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for allowing smaller, grass-roots organizations like ours to help fund research projects like Dr. Walensky’s. Without the help of the St. Baldrick’s Scientific Advisory Committee, we would not be able to determine where best to invest our research dollars. St. Baldrick’s allows us to support ground-breaking research; research that someday may save a child’s life. There’s no coincidence that Campbell sent this project to us, being that Dr. Walensky is affiliated with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children’s Hospital of Boston, which is one of the institutions that Campbell was treated.”

The Team Campbell Foundation was created in honor and in memory of Campbell Hoyt, who passed away from anaplastic ependymoma, a rare cancer of the brain and spine. Despite battling cancer, Campbell loved helping others and would often comfort nervous patients she saw in the playroom. For Campbell’s 7th birthday, she had a birthday bake sale that raised $5,651 to help put smiles on the faces of other kids at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Through Campbell’s family and the Team Campbell Foundation, her gift of giving and caring for others will live on.
