Nearly $1 Million Awarded to Seattle Institutions to Support Promising Childhood Cancer Research

Part of $22 Million Awarded in New Grants by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation

SEATTLE (September 27, 2016) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, is proud to award nearly $1 million in grants to Seattle institutions to support research that aims to find cures and better treatments for pediatric cancers.

Two grants, totaling $303,550, were awarded to support work being done at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Navin Pinto, M.D., based on progress to date, was awarded a new $115,000 St. Baldrick’s Scholar grant to use a patient’s genetics to identify children that may be resistant to chemotherapy. This would allow researchers to further refine the risk stratification and alter therapy for those patients at highest risk of relapse, to ultimately find a cure for more children.

Agne Taraseviciute, M.D., Ph.D., was awarded the Team Abby Gives St. Baldrick’s Fellow Award for $188,550. Dr. Taraseviciute is studying how the immune system can be used to fight remaining leukemia cells after bone marrow transplants.

One extended consortium grant, totaling $500,000, was awarded to Soheil Meschinchi, M.D., Ph.D., at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Meschinchi studies the function of a mutation found in AML patients to learn how it might be used as a therapeutic target.

Based on progress to date, Eleanor Chen, M.D., Ph.D., at University of Washington, was awarded $75,000 to fund an additional year of her St. Baldrick’s Scholar award. Dr. Chen’s research aims to discover new drugs that would prevent cancer relapse in children with rhabdomyosarcoma.
