Micaela’s Army Foundation and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Partner to Fund Childhood Cancer Research

Plano, Texas – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, is proud to announce that it has partnered with the Micaela’s Army Foundation in Plano, Texas to support the best research to find cures and better treatments for kids with cancer.

This year, the funds raised by Micaela’s Army Foundation went to support a $115,000 St. Baldrick’s Scholar awarded to Jessica Shand, M.D., at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Shand studies the way that leukemia cells communicate with immune cells in the bone marrow, and how this communication can be redirected to kill the cancer cells and cure certain types of leukemia that are typically difficult to treat.

“We want to be a voice for pediatric cancer research and by partnering with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation we have the ability to be a strong loud voice for more funding in pediatric cancer research and for the children who face cancer,” said Sharon White, Micaela’s mom. “One day we may find a cure and families will not have to know pediatric cancer like we do.”

Micaela’s Army Foundation was created in honor of Micaela White, a brave, funny, kind, smart, beautiful loving person. She had a tremendous love of life, her family, friends but her true passion was dance. Micaela was looking forward to attending the University of Oklahoma until her world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in December 2010. After enduring chemotherapy, surgery and a bone marrow transplant, Micaela passed away in August 2011 from complications from her treatment.

Micaela’s Army was originally a group of warriors loving and supporting Micaela through her battle with leukemia. Now Micaela’s spirit continues to inspire people to fight to find a cure for better treatments for children, adolescents and young adults. In 2018, Micaela’s Army Foundation partnered with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to fund the best childhood cancer research.
