Childhood Cancer Research Grant Given in Honor of Austin Child

AUSTIN, Texas (September 18,2017) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, is proud to announce that a St. Baldrick’s Hero Fund created in honor of Georgia Moore, from Austin, Texas, will support lifesaving childhood cancer research.

This year, the Georgia and the Peachy Keens St. Baldrick’s Supportive Care Research Grant was awarded to Dr. Naomi Winick at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. The $47,742 grant will support Dr. Winick’s research, which is focused on determining whether or not a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is able to complete a series of computer-based training sessions at home, while they are receiving oral chemotherapy. The training sessions are designed to improve attention and working memory – two things that often deteriorate while fighting ALL.

Should these training sessions prove to be feasible for the children and their families, future studies will determine how effective they will be in preserving attention and working memory.

“We are honored to once again partner with St. Baldrick’s in the mission to conquer childhood cancer, and we are incredibly grateful for our donors and their support. Even as Georgia celebrates her fifth year off treatment and looks forward to college next year, we are ever-mindful of the effects of her treatment and the impact it will have on the rest of her life,” said Georgia’s mom, Courtney Moore. “Supportive care research will help her and other survivors thrive after treatment, so we are dedicated to making that happen with St. Baldrick’s. It’s very gratifying – and extremely humbling – to be a part of this army of hope, and we will continue to raise our voices and funds for research until we’ve found a cure.”

The Georgia and the Peachy Keens Hero Fund was created in honor of Georgia Moore, who is celebrating five years cancer-free. As a leukemia survivor, she inspires others to “just keep swimming,” her motto throughout 28 months of treatment for ALL. After receiving the diagnosis on her 10th birthday and enduring countless infusions, transfusions, pills and spinal taps, she “just kept swimming” until she beat her battle with cancer. Georgia now calls others to raise awareness and research dollars, raising more than $155,000 for her hero fund since 2010.

A St. Baldrick’s Hero Fund is an ongoing way for friends, family members, or groups to donate or raise funds for a loved one. To learn more about the program visit the Hero Fund page.
