$50,000 Awarded to Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota to Support Groundwork for Childhood Cancer Research

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (January 30, 2017) – Childhood cancer patients depend on clinical trials to find new treatment options when most available treatment options don’t work. Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota received an infrastructure grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to provide their patients with the most promising new treatment options.

Funding from St. Baldrick’s, totaling $50,000, will help facilitate retrospective clinical studies to inform the design of future clinical trials for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT)/Oncology patients needing critical care services. This clinical research subgroup is a unique, first-in-kind collaboration of established HSCT/Oncology and Critical Care physicians and researchers across multiple institutions. They are dedicated to understanding life-threatening complications of cancer and its treatment in order to improve the care and outcomes of children with cancer.

Infrastructure grants are awarded based on the need of the institution and its patients, anticipated results of the grant and local participation in St. Baldrick’s fundraising events and activities.

This series of grants, combined with the more than $22 million awarded in July, brings the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s funding total to $24.1 million awarded in 2016.
