$50,000 Awarded to Hackensack University Medical Center to Support Groundwork for Childhood Cancer Research

Hackensack, N.J. (February 27, 2017) – Eighty percent of children who survive their cancer diagnosis will suffer from a severe or life-threatening condition as a result of their treatment. Hackensack University Medical Center will receive an infrastructure grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to help children with cancer live better.

Funding from St. Baldrick’s, totaling $50,000, will allow Hackensack University Medical Center to improve the lives of children with cancer by researching and providing programs that help them feel healthier and happier, such as yoga, nutrition, and ways to cope with nausea.

“This grant is important because it will support a new avenue in childhood cancer research to treat pediatric oncology patients in a holistic way,” said Cindy S. Steele, M.D., at Hackensack University Medical Center. “While basic science is important, our integrative medicine research and programs will provide direct, tangible improvements in quality of life for children with cancer.”

Infrastructure grants are awarded based on the need of the institution and its patients, anticipated results of the grant and local participation in St. Baldrick’s fundraising events and activities.

This series of grants, combined with the more than $22 million awarded in July, brings the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s funding total to $24.1 million awarded in 2016.
