$50,000 Awarded to Duke University Medical Center to Support Groundwork for Childhood Cancer Research

DURHAM, N.C. (January 30, 2017) – Eighty percent of children who survive their cancer diagnosis will suffer from a severe or life-threatening condition as a result of their treatment. Duke University Medical Center has received an infrastructure grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to help children who survive their cancer diagnosis live better.

Funding from St. Baldrick’s, totaling $50,000, will allow Duke University Medical Center to improve the care of adolescents and young adult cancer patients by strengthening the ties between pediatric and medical oncology. With increased collaboration and communication, they will be able to provide the best possible medical and psychosocial care for their patients.

“The current funding environment for research and patient support programs is very challenging,” said David Van Mater, M.D., Ph.D., a pediatric oncologist at Duke Children’s. “St. Baldrick’s provides a tremendous resource to our community.”

Infrastructure grants are awarded based on the need of the institution and its patients, anticipated results of the grant, and local participation in St. Baldrick’s fundraising events and activities.

This series of grants, combined with the more than $22 million awarded in July, brings the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s funding total to $24.1 million awarded in 2016.
