$115,000 Awarded to the University of Virginia School of Medicine to Support Promising Childhood Cancer Research
Part of $22 Million Awarded in New Grants by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (September 27, 2016) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, is proud to award a $115,000 extended St. Baldrick’s Scholar award to support the work of Daniel Lee, M.D., a researcher who recently joined the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Based on progress to date, Dr. Daniel Lee was awarded a new grant to this St. Baldrick’s Scholar award. Dr. Lee’s project is one of the first to bring a promising new therapy, immunotherapy, to children with cancer. His research aims to discover how immune cells can be engineered to recognize and kill cancer cells.
Dr. Lee’s research is already showing promising results. Phineas Sandi, 2016 St. Baldrick’s Ambassador, was accepted into the immunotherapy trial led by Dr. Lee after he was diagnosed with a chemo-resistant form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Two years after enrolling in the trial, Phineas is now cancer free and enjoying his childhood.
Help the St. Baldrick’s Foundation continue to fund the best research, wherever it takes place. Make a donation today.
