$100 Million Campaign to Conquer Childhood Cancers Kicks Off in Boston

Tech Tackles Cancer, spearheaded by technology venture capitalist Chris Lynch, looks to galvanize the tech community across the country

BOSTON (October 5, 2016) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, is proud to announce that Tech Tackles Cancer, an initiative by the global tech community to help cure childhood cancers, will kick off its $100 million campaign with a St. Baldrick’s signature head-shaving event on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Lansdowne Pub in Boston, Mass.

The campaign is being led by Chris Lynch, technology venture capitalist, co-founder of Boston-based Accomplice, and a board member at the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Lynch has hosted his own St. Baldrick’s event in Boston since 2012, and with the help of the local tech community has raised nearly $1 million for childhood cancer research. Funds raised through his event have supported research taking place at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass., and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in Los Angeles, Calif. This year’s Boston event has a goal of raising $500,000.

“Cancer is the number one killer of disease-related death in children,” said Lynch. “As a father of five healthy children, I decided to do something about it. When I learned St. Baldrick’s funds only the best research from around the world and is not bound by any one organization or agenda, I knew where to put the shoulder of the Boston tech community.”

This year’s fundraising campaign in Boston will culminate in a celebratory event that promises to see several of Boston’s most (in) famous tech entrepreneurs go bald for the cause.

When: Monday, Nov. 7, 2016
6:30 p.m.

Where: Lansdowne Pub
9 Lansdowne St., Boston

Chris Lynch invites all Boston residents to get involved in the cause. Anyone can sign up to shave their head and raise money as part of the Tech Tackles Cancer Boston event. Lynch has committed $20,000 to each of the first five new teams that reach $10,000. Interested participants can create a fundraising page, or organize a team at their company, by clicking here. For those not interested in shaving, they can donate to support the event’s shavees, or buy tickets to the head-shaving event.

The Boston event is just the first step in this national campaign. Tech communities in New York, N.Y., Washington, D.C., and Austin, Texas, have also stepped up to host their own events.

Tech Tackles Cancer Boston is supported by organizer hack/reduce, media partner Bostinno, and the event space provider Lansdowne Pub (The Lyons Group).
