You heard it right - I'm shaving my head in solidarity with children who have cancer and typically lose their hair during treatment, while raising critical funds for childhood cancer research!
I have worked and volunteered with children undergoing treatment for cancer. The strength and determination that they show is unbelievable! Shaving my head will take only a miniscule amount of courage that they portray while they battle cancer. In the US, more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease but the leaps and bounds that have been made through research to improve cure rates have been wonderful. More research can only lead to more survivors!
In particular, I am doing this in memory of a boy named Jamie that I met in 2001 at Camp Special Love (camp for children with cancer). He had a sweet smile, a twinkle in his eye, and a positive energy through his treatment. Jamie lost his battle in 2002 at 10 years old. I only knew him a short time but he had a lasting impact on my life. In general, I am doing this in honor every person battling cancer. They don't have a choice as to whether they lose their hair... it's a result of what they need to do to survive. This is something that I can do to help raise money as well as to show them that it's ok to be bald!
Please make a donation on my behalf to support childhood cancer research so that all children diagnosed with cancer will have a better chance for a cure.
