This is Adam's mommy writing. This is my take on why Adam is participating in St. Baldricks. Realizing it may be part fiction due to a mother's wishful thinking! Here goes: Adam observed me when I trained and raised monies for 2 consecutive years for the Susan G Komen Foundation. We oftentimes reviewed the web pages of other Walkers and saw pictures and read stories of little kids whose moms were fighting for their lives. I think he empathized with those kids and, then, he started talking about growing his hair for "Locks of Love". I put the kabash on that when I heard how long his locks would have to get! His third grade teacher, Mr. David Craig, mentioned St. Baldricks and we thought we'd get a group together to have our own 3rd grade school event. Due to oh so many roadblocks coupled with there not being enough hours in the day, we decided to join another event (vs hosting our own).
We selected Danny's Pub event after reading about Brianna - whose memory this event honors. While we never knew her, Brianna sounds like she was a wonderful and brave girl and we're humbled to be part of her team.
I'm proud of the fact that Adam wants to shave his hair to help find a cure to help other children like Brianna. I'm hoping it will be the start of other efforts by him to use his blessings to help others.
Fessing up now, I think Adam enjoys having long hair . . . so it will be interesting to see, after the St. Baldrick's "shave," how long we go until the next Barber shop visit! Right now, he really needs a haircut!!
Adam's comments: Don't listen to my mom! I don't need a haircut but I want to donate my hair to help kids with cancer so I'm doing St. Baldrick's (mom's comment - I've told him his hair doesn't get donated like in Locks of Love but it doesn't register. You've heard of willful blindness? Well, this is willful deafness!) Please help me and donate money on my webpage. You can see my picture on St Patrick's day when I had green hair. Thank you.
Mom's final comment: Realizing there are many, many worthy causes - if you can make any kind of donation to St. Baldrick's, you can take comfort in knowing your contribution is going to fund research to help find a cure for childhood cancers. You probably don't realize how many different cancers can afflict our children. It always feels so much more personal when kids are sick - regardless if you know them. Just their stories are enough to compel you to act. If you can make a donation, thank you. If you cannot, please say a quick prayer for the children.
Also, our event is in less than 2 weeks so if you do plan to contribute to this cause, please do so now while it's on your mind. Click "Make a donation" to give online, or donate by phone or mail.
