Cancer is bad.
I believe when there is a problem, when something is bad, it is important to do whatever possible to help fix it and make things good.
St. Baldrick’s is a foundation that raises money for cancer research, specifically for childhood cancers. Each year a fundraiser is held and many people sign up to be “shavees” which means that they shave their heads as a symbol of standing in solidarity with cancer patients. St. Baldrick’s also partners with Locks For Love, a non-profit that uses donated long hair to make wigs for cancer patients.
Cancer has affected many people in my family: my grandmas Peggy Harmon and Claire Junkins, my grandpa Frank Harmon and my aunt Patty Brennan. I never got the opportunity to meet my aunt Eileen Wlazlo because she died from cancer before I was born. My mom tells me she was a pretty spectacular lady.
I am participating in the March 12, 2010 St. Baldrick’s fundraiser at Christ the King School in honor of these people. While St. Baldrick’s funds childhood cancer research, to me, any effort to win the war against cancer is important.
I have grown my hair very long. I will donate my nine-inch ponytail that will be used to make wigs for cancer patients who lose their hair. I am also trying to raise as much money as possible to donate along with my ponytail!
My parents tell me that just about everyone in the world knows someone who has or has had cancer. I am trying to do my part to eliminate this problem. Please help me by making a donation to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. We can both be a part of the solution.
Thank you for helping me. Thank you for helping to find a cure for cancer.
Love,
Kate Junkins
