I'm Molly Shumaker, and a sophomore at Missouri Southern State University. In 2006, my grandmother passed away after a battle with cancer. In this respect, I know the devistation that cancer causes as it hurts the individual and everyone who cares about them.
I am lucky to have never had to face childhood cancer, but others are not so lucky. According to the National Cancer Institute's webpage on childhood cancer, "In the United States in 2007, approximately 10,400 children under age 15 were diagnosed with cancer and about 1,545 children will die from the disease. This makes cancer the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children 1 to 14 years of age."
I want to give these children a gift, or at least help them out. Every child deserves a happy childhood. Developing better technologies not only improves survival rates, but also makes treating cancer more effective.
With head-shaving and other fundraising events, the St. Baldrick's Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
Any donation of time, money, or other resources goes to help fund these vital forms of research.
