Let Your Head Shine – Boise

Every two years since 2012, I have participated in the St. Baldrick's fundraiser. I shave my head and build awareness of the need for continued funding for cancer research. Because of generous donors like you, I have raised a total of $47,000!!  This accomplishment has given me great pride and I am honored to be supported by so many.

My sister Anne’s battle with cancer began in 1972 when she was 3 and I was still in diapers. Thanks to my parent's proximity to cutting-edge cancer research, she defeated Leukemia and was the FIRST SURVIVOR at the progressive Portland hospital. Giving back in this way felt incredible so I decided to do it again in 2014. Again, with my sister by my side. In 2016, I was once again inspired to raise funds for research when my friend Karen discovered she had Stage 4 Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer. Karen is a friend, wife, mother and a busy executive. Cancer disrupted her life greatly, but after a double mastectomy, and a 7 month series of chemo, radiation and hormone treatments, her cancer is now in its fourth (not sure how long?) year of remission!

After exceeding my goal of raising $25,000 and shaving my head three times, I retired from St. Baldrick's.

But then I met 3 year old Easton Brown.

For Shane and Paige Brown, 2016 was similar to 1972 for my parents. It started as a drooping eyelid. After CT scans, blood work, bone scans, bone marrow sample, spinal tap and a biopsy, Easton was diagnosed with Orbital Rhabdomyosarcoma. He started an aggressive 6 month protocol of chemo and proton radiation. Now 6 year old Easton is back playing with his superheroes and is 2 years and 9 months in remission!

MY SISTER ANNE, KAREN & EASTON ARE SURVIVORS. CANCER RESEARCH SAVED THEIR LIVES.

Chances are you have a loved one who has been affected by cancer. Unfortunately, far too many are still fighting the battle. If you would like to support me, Anne, Karen, Paige and Easton, please consider making a donation in their honor, or in honor of your own loved one. Also, I'd love to have your support on March 17th when I shave my head for the fourth time! (For the last time?) This event will be bigger than ever! Paige Brown and I are once again joining forces but this time we are not just giving back to St Baldrick's, but also a local non-profit Paige co-founded called Shinecology. Shinecology connects pediatric cancer families to each other and their resources in our community. Starting today, and leading to the event on March 17th, our goal is to raise $20,000 to benefit both St. Baldrick’s and Shinecology! Can you help us?

Gratefully,

Ty Porter
