September 20, 2013

Zoe, a 2010 St. Baldrick’s Ambassador, was diagnosed with Ph+ ALL when she was 4 years old. Now 9, Zoe is starting fourth grade, taking hip hop and ballet classes, and is starting treatment with a targeted chemotherapy pill. Zoe’s mom, Suzanne, gives us an update.

2010 St. Baldrick’s Ambassador Zoe with her mom, Suzanne.  Zoe recently started treatment for a molecular relapse due to Ph+ ALL.

When I think of all the things Zoe has seen and done in her life, it is hard to believe she is only 9 years old.

When Zoe was 4, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. At first we were told it was the best-case scenario, that leukemia had great treatments and outcomes.

Eight days later, that all changed.

Announcing the Stand Up To Cancer – St. Baldrick’s Pediatric Cancer Dream Team [VIDEO]

by Kathleen Ruddy, CEO, St. Baldrick's Foundation
April 7, 2013

Formerly known as the St. Baldrick’s – Stand Up to Cancer Pediatric Cancer Dream Team, this team is now the St. Baldrick’s EPICC Team (Empowering Pediatric Immunotherapies for Childhood Cancer).

I wish you could have been with us in the room when the first pediatric cancer Dream Team was announced, to be funded by the partnership of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C).

From a long list of innovative “big ideas,” the scientific reviewers representing both funding organizations had chosen the top four to submit detailed proposals. The experts agreed that any of these would be great investments, but for a grant of $14.5 million over four years, only one could be chosen.

The suspense ended with an enthusiastic round of applause when the winning Dream Team was announced at a reception tonight at the annual meeting of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). The evening’s emcee was actor Kyle MacLachlan, and speakers included Nobel Laureate Dr. Philip Sharp, St. Baldrick’s CEO Kathleen Ruddy, and 10-year-old cancer survivor Emma W. and her parents.

And the award goes to:

My name is William. I am 14 years old.

Ten years ago, just after my fourth birthday, I was diagnosed with a childhood cancer called pleuropulmonary blastoma, or PPB. I had to have surgery to remove tumors from my lungs followed by months of chemotherapy to make sure it stayed away.

Luckily, for me, the treatment worked. But for many, treatment doesn’t work and they don’t survive. In fact, several of my friends and roommates from the hospital died while I was being treated.

First and foremost, I want to thank the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer for allowing us to represent the collaboration of these two organizations on the Stand Up To Cancer Broadcast last Friday evening. We were proud to represent our beautiful ANGEL friends, our fellow cancer fighters, and those who will be following us in the future. In my perfect world, I imagine a day when a child comes to my office with a cancer diagnosis and I can prescribe a 10-day course of medicine, just like penicillin for strep throat, and he’s cured. This summer, with the help of donors like you, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation was able to fund a record-breaking total of $23 million in grants towards lifesaving childhood cancer research, bringing the Foundation’s funding total to more than $101 million since becoming an independent charity in 2005. This research is the only path to perfect-world treatments.

These grants will have great impact on children with cancer – keeping the research and clinical trials going, which is the lifeblood of improving treatment. They will help families and all of the institutions that help those families, both in the U.S. and around the world.

As many of you know, Justin, St. Baldrick’s Foundation 2012 Ambassador Kid, is battling childhood cancer for the fifth time. His family has decided to move forward with MIBG therapy, an up-and-coming treatment for advanced-stage neuroblastoma. He started this therapy today at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

MIBG is a form of radiation therapy that is safer than traditional radiation because it can deliver the radiation directly to the tumor. This means that all other healthy tissues in his body will receive minimal exposure.

15 Months: An Unforgettable Experience with a Childhood Cancer Patient [VIDEO]

by St. Baldrick's Foundation

Some moments are unforgettable – like the moment Dr. Jason Yustein met Katie*, a nine-year-old child with cancer.

Katie’s family had piled into their family car to drive more than five hours from West Virginia to Baltimore, Maryland with Katie’s MRI results in hand and a recommendation from their pediatrician to get a second opinion at Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital.

“As a fellow, you’re the first one to get called into the ER,” says Yustein. When he met Katie, he noticed her lack of coordination and balance and heard her complain of headaches. On her MRI, he saw a large brain tumor. “A particular percentage was inoperable, and therefore, fatal. There would be no cure for the patient,” he recalls.
