Tom, a volunteer event organizer (VEO) and eight-time shavee℠, first brought St. Baldrick’s to his university campus in 2011. He let us in on his tips for a successful college fundraising event.

In the fall of 2010, I was sitting in my freshman dorm room at Valparaiso University looking to sign up for a local St. Baldrick’s event. After being involved with St. Baldrick’s for all four years of high school, I wanted to continue being a part of this great foundation.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find an event near me.

I decided to bring the idea to my soccer coach to start a St. Baldrick’s event at Valpo. He agreed, and for the past four years we have been putting on a head-shaving event.

The first time Bethany Tozier attended a St. Baldrick’s event was as a spectator. The head-shaving took place before a roller derby bout in Rochester, New York, where Bethany’s New Hampshire Roller Derby (NHRD) team was competing.

As she watched two of her teammates go bald, she was overcome with emotion. And when NHRD announced they would be hosting their own St. Baldrick’s event months later, Bethany was quick to sign up as a shavee. She was soon joined by five of her league mates.

The shave was scheduled to take place between two bouts of a double header. Bethany looked on as her league mates went under the buzzer.
