As she watched two of her teammates go bald, she was overcome with emotion. And when NHRD announced they would be hosting their own St. Baldrick’s event months later, Bethany was quick to sign up as a shavee. She was soon joined by five of her league mates.
The shave was scheduled to take place between two bouts of a double header. Bethany looked on as her league mates went under the buzzer.
Soon it was Bethany’s turn.
“Before I knew it, I held in my hands two braids,” she said. “I could not stop laughing.”
She didn’t have much time to relish her new haircut before the next bout started. “I skated hard and at my best, and stayed positive,” Bethany said. “Nothing could touch me.” Her performance that day earned her the title of MVP. “It was an amazing, freeing and fulfilling day,” Bethany said. “Everything about it was beautiful.” “I hope that others step up, and more leagues host St. Baldrick’s events and join in the effort to conquer childhood cancers,” Bethany said. “This is one of the best events I have ever participated in. I hope NHRD does it again next year.”Visit our sports page to learn how you can get your team involved in a St. Baldrick’s event.
