Mother’s Day Without My Baby

Motherhood is a sweet privilege.

Having a child with cancer is a cruel torture.

My daily reality: Being “that” mother who lost her child to cancer.

Four years ago, during the latter stages of Jordan’s cancer treatments for alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, our family was invited to be the PGA’s special guests at “The Players” Championship Golf Tournament in Jacksonville, Florida.

That would be my last Mother’s Day with Jordan.

The day started with a very special brunch in the Golfers’ clubhouse. I remember Jordan being excited by the tremendous array of “sweet treats.” I remember being happy to see him smiling, comfortable, and in good spirits.

The day was packed with fun activities and ended with a surprise one-on-one visit with former President George H. W. Bush Sr. who was being recognized with a special lifetime achievement award. President Bush was very kind, gracious, and expressed a deep concern about Jordan’s condition and prognosis.

While we were doing a “photo op” with him on the balcony of the beautiful clubhouse, he softly whispered in my ear: “How’s he doing?”

Later that night, I told Jordan about what President Bush had said. Jordan responded: “I know mom, I heard him.”

Of course he did. Lord I miss that boy!

The very best memory was having him with me smiling and feeling good — there is nothing better to soothe a mother’s soul. I will always cherish that day, and every day I was honored to have him in my life.

I would like to wish all the “Angel Mommas” a Happy Mother’s Day!

Although our babies can’t be here physically to give us that big hug and “I love you” that we all yearn for, may their spirit be close and may you take comfort in the love that once was and continues to be. We have had the privilege of a lifetime.

You are ALL very special mothers and I’m certain your baby is proud!

Aloha,
Laurie, Jordan’s forever mom
