College isn’t just about gaining an education to guide you down your chosen career path. It’s about figuring out who you are as an individual. And in order to do that, you need discover what your passions are and what difference you’d like to make in the world.

Students all over the country have been deciding that their passion is to help cure childhood cancer. And many have taken it upon themselves to start a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser on their campus.

“My grandmother passed away from a five-year battle with cancer. So I knew I had to do it because if I have all of this trouble losing someone who had a full life, I don’t know how anyone can deal with losing a child to cancer. So I just wanted to do my part to help.” –Mike Holz, shavee and volunteer, University of Illinois

“I think it is HUGE to [host a St. Baldrick’s event] on college campus! This is the time, right now is when we need to be proactive about this – we have the energy, we have the time, and it’s the perfect place to do it!” –Jennifer Rowley, shavee and volunteer, University of Illinois

We want YOU to get involved! The best part of hosting a St. Baldrick’s event on campus is challenging your entire university to work together and see just how much you can raise as a unified student body. Reach out to the faculty to see if they want to get involved as well — make it a friendly competition among teams!

All we need from you is:
  • at least five committed volunteers who are willing to help you plan and execute an amazing event,
  • the willingness to take care of a little paperwork, and
  • a commitment to recruit, promote, and fundraise to the best of your ability.

In 2014, we had over 140 university events that raised a whopping $1.9 million, and more than 5,800 students, faculty and staff braved the shave!

A few of our top volunteer event organizers (VEOs) share their advice for anyone considering bringing a St. Baldrick’s event to their college campus:

“I think I have been blessed with great volunteers that make the day go so smoothly. The word gets out for the people to want to come back next year and bring friends. In terms of pointers, if you can get the crew of people that run the buildings and grounds behind you, they can get anything you need and the event will be great.” –Vinny Garrison, shavee and VEO, Dominican College

“[Advertising] on a college campus it is essential to spreading the word. We typically submit scrolling television ads for nearly all residences halls and academic buildings. We also go door-to-door in the residence halls to hand out fliers and slide the fliers under the door with information about the event.” –Sean Soboloski, shavee and VEO, Drexel University

As your coach, I will be there to help you along the way, providing you with the tips, tools, and supplies to plan a successful event.

My goal is not only to provide you with a life-changing experience but to teach you valuable skills that will help you develop professionally. In the past, outstanding volunteers who want to transition their skills to the workplace have received letters of recommendation and LinkedIn endorsements from me — your experience with St. Baldrick’s just might be the bridge to your dream job!

And for kids with cancer, it just might be the bridge to a cure.
