AmWINS Casual Day Raises Money for Kids’ Cancer Foundation

AmWINS Group, Inc. has always been an organization with heart. For years, our individual offices have initiated efforts to give back to their local communities – from toy drives to sending military care packages overseas, AmWINS employees have continually shown a commitment to serving others inside and outside of the office.

After looking at all of our tremendous efforts in offices spanning the globe, we began to realize that if we committed to a cause together as an organization, we could really make a difference – all of our offices working as a team for a common purpose!

In October 2010, AmWINS announced a partnership with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. In our first four months of this new relationship, AmWINS kick-started efforts and raised $200,000 for childhood cancer research thanks in large part to some very brave employees who shaved their heads. The momentum grew, and we saw employees really getting behind St. Baldrick’s and their mission to conquer childhood cancer.

AmWINS employees donated $1 to wear flip-flops or jeans, and $2 to wear both!

I’m in the Dallas, TX office, where the hot summer months are particularly oppressive. How nice it would be, I thought, to not have to get all dressed up to come to the office in the seemingly never-ending heat. That’s when the light bulb appeared: what if we combined raising money for St. Baldrick’s with wearing jeans or flip-flops to the office for the summer?

I ran the idea by a few people and, to my delight, everyone was on board. Other offices embraced the idea and wanted to join in as well! About a dozen AmWINS locations traded business attire for jeans and exposed their toes in flip-flops for the Casual to Conquer campaign, with a goal of raising $10,000 by the end of summer. Employees were given the option to pay $1 to wear jeans or flip-flops, or $2 to wear jeans AND flip-flops.

We tallied up the Casual to Conquer donations at the end of summer, and AmWINS far exceeded our $10,000 goal. Many offices even decided to instate the Casual to Conquer campaign year-round! Two years later, AmWINS employees have raised more than $28,000 for St. Baldrick’s through this effort. As the summer months approach, that number, just like the temperature, will only rise.

It’s amazing to see such a simple idea catch on and spread to impact such a worthy cause!
