A ‘Bake-Free Sale’ In Honor of Annika, Childhood Cancer Survivor

by Rebecca Bernot, St. Baldrick's Foundation
May 20, 2014

It might be the only bake sale you’ll ever see that’s entirely calorie-free, and it’s helping kids with cancer.

When Annika was 11, she was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a very fast-growing cancer in children. She endured surgery followed by radiation and two rounds of intense chemotherapy, which left her extremely tired, nauseous, and in a lot of pain. She celebrated her 12th birthday in a hospital room.

Today, Annika is celebrating five years cancer free.

The five-year mark is a momentous one in the childhood cancer world. Research shows that your chances of relapsing are much lower after five years.

Annika’s mom, Karla, is shaving her head with the 46 Mommas on July 27. To celebrate Annika’s milestone, Karla is hosting a virtual bake sale to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Each price is just a suggested donation, and any amount you give before June 30 will go toward research being done this year. This is the research that children with cancer right now are depending on.

  • “Cupcake” – $3 each or $36/dozen
  • “Cookie” – $1 each or $12/dozen
  • “Brownie” – $1.50 each or $18/dozen
  • “Bread” – $2.00 per slice or $10/loaf
  • “Scone” – $2.50 each or $30/dozen

And since there are no real baked goods involved, you can rest easy knowing your “purchase” is calorie-free, allergen-free, and 100% guilt-free!

Honor Annika and help kids with cancer with a donation to Karla’s bake-free sale.
