2020 Infrastructure Grants: Critical to Giving Kids the Best Treatment Options

by St. Baldrick's Foundation
November 17, 2020

Enrollment on a clinical trial is often a child’s best hope for a cure.

Clinical trials offer children in treatment hope for a better future with fewer side effects. Clinical trials also help scientists to improve upon the standard treatments of today, making significant strides towards more effective and less toxic cures for children now and in the future.

Clinical trials are coordinated by Clinical Research Associates (CRAs), who make sure the patient’s treatment is conducted exactly according to protocol, for the sake of accurate research results. In addition to a lot of behind the scenes work to collect and submit samples and data, a CRA works directly with the patients and their families to ensure they understand everything involved in the treatment.

Without a CRA on staff, an institution wouldn’t be able to open a clinical trial, let alone coordinate patient care on a trial. And without trials open at their local institution, families often have to travel to distant locations to get the most cutting-edge treatment options. That’s especially difficult with today’s Covid-19 challenges.

To ensure institutions have the ability to open, coordinate, and treat more children on clinical trials closer to home, these one-year grants will support this critical role at 17 institutions.

Read on to see which institutions were awarded these critical grants. Be sure to follow us on LinkedIn to see our upcoming live stream where you can meet some of the researchers funded, as well as kids and families who benefit from these trials, and some of the volunteers and donors who make these grants possible.
