Thousands Go Bald This March to Raise Money for Childhood Cancer Research

NEW YORK (March 17, 2016) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, would like to recognize the thousands of generous shavees, volunteers and donors taking part in St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events this March. This month alone, nearly 43,000 shavees will get bald at over 640 events, and so far in 2016 more than $18 million has been raised for childhood cancer research.

“I am amazed to see how far St. Baldrick’s has grown since the first head-shaving event on St. Patrick’s Day 16 years ago,” said Kathleen Ruddy, CEO of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. “We believe that kids are special and it’s important to fund research that allows for treatments designed for their growing and developing bodies. St. Baldrick’s wouldn’t exist without the amazing support of our volunteers, and we are thankful for each person willing to shave their head to help give kids the healthy childhoods they deserve.”

The first St. Baldrick’s event in 2000 raised an impressive $104,000, and over the years the Foundation has grown to be the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, awarding more than $178 million since 2005. Today, dedicated shavees from Markit, a St. Baldrick’s corporate partner, joined the hosts of Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” to kick off their 24-hour company event by hosting a live head-shaving on air. St. Baldrick’s co-founder and board member, John Bender, was also there to root them on and share about the importance of raising money for childhood cancer research.
