Brave the Shave! Worldwide Head-Shaving Events: the Power of One Makes a Difference in Finding Cures for Childhood Cancers

Thousands of volunteers get bald to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation

LOS ANGELES (February 5, 2015) –The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer grants worldwide, is excited to kick off its 2015 season of signature head-shaving events, with thousands of volunteers braving the shave and going bald to conquer kids’ cancer. As the world’s largest volunteer-driven organization for childhood cancer, the “power of one” has made a difference, with individuals raising millions of dollars to help fund the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and to give survivors long and healthy lives.

So far this year, nearly 10,000 volunteers have registered to shave their heads, raising more than $2 million for childhood cancer research. From now until the end of March, more than 600 events are scheduled in cities across the country and around the world. It’s St. Baldrick’s goal to grow that number, creating this inspirational video featuring past participants of our Brave the Shave events and inviting more volunteers than ever before to join in.

“I didn’t realize the magnitude of what the St. Baldrick’s Foundation really does, until I felt the clippers to my head and was consumed with a feeling that this was something much more than a simple haircut for a good cause,” said Sean Moody, a St. Baldrick’s past shavee. “My head-shaving experience really was life changing. To see the brave kids and families of children that are faced with cancer and hearing their stories, I realized the impact that one person can have. It was quite humbling.”

The sad fact is that every 3 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide. The time to help is now. Since 2005, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has awarded more than $154 million to support research that shows the most promise in finding cures and better treatments for children fighting cancer. This year, the Foundation hopes to surpass its 2014 fundraising record of $38.9 million. We need YOU to help make that happen.
