$87,171 Childhood Cancer Research Grant Awarded to Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (December 22, 2014) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer research, is proud to award a one-year, $87,151 grant to the Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland. This grant is one of 40 infrastructure grants awarded as part of the Foundation’s recent grant cycle, totaling more than $2.5 million and surpassing last year’s total awarded during this same period.

This grant continues to fund Children’s Comprehensive Long-Term Follow-up Program and includes the creation of a transition program designed to monitor the medical and psychosocial issues that young cancer patients face as they enter into adulthood. This transition program allows young adult survivors of pediatric cancer to access and enter the adult medical community with the proper support and guidance needed for success.

“This grant is important to the Oncology Department and the Psychology Oncology Program at Children’s Hospital and Research Center, Oakland because without it pediatric cancer survivors would not get the multidisciplinary follow up necessary to cope with medical and psychosocial late effects from their cancer and its treatment,” explains Dina Hankin, Ph.D., pediatric clinical psychologist at Children’s Oakland.

This series of grants, combined with the more than $24.7 million awarded in July to fund cutting-edge research, brings the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s funding total to more than $27.2 million awarded in 2014. Grants were awarded based on the need of the institution and its patients, anticipated results of the grant and local participation in St. Baldrick’s fundraising events and activities.
