$40,937 Awarded to University at Buffalo Community Health Researcher

Part of More Than $24.7 Million Awarded in New Grants by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation

BUFFALO, N.Y. (October 14, 2014) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, is proud to award a one-year St. Baldrick’s Supportive Care Research grant for $40,937 to Elizabeth Gage-Bouchard, Ph.D., assistant professor of community health and health behavior, School of Public Health and Health Professions, University at Buffalo.

While great advances have been made in childhood cancer treatment, all children do not benefit equally from these innovations. Dr. Gage-Bouchard is examining the factors that shape families’ abilities to comply with treatment protocols – a critical first step in developing interventions to increase treatment adherence among children diagnosed with cancer. Enhancing the abilities of childhood cancer families to adhere to treatment protocols is of critical importance to ensure that all children benefit from innovations in care.

“The funding provided by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support this research will make a critical contribution to understanding families’ experiences managing the demanding treatment protocols for pediatric cancer,” said Dr. Gage-Bouchard. “Findings from this study will help us tailor programs that help families manage the intensive demands of cancer treatment.”

Through the vigorous efforts of volunteers and supporters in the U.S. and around the world, the Foundation is not only honored to award this local grant, but will fund a total of more than $24.7 million to institutions across the country in its 2014 summer grant cycle.
