$200,000 Awarded to Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center to Help Fight Childhood Cancer

Part of $21.2 Million Awarded in New Grants by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation

BALTIMORE (July 29, 2015) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, is proud to award nearly $200,000 in grants to Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center to support research that looks to find cures and better treatments for pediatric cancers.

A total of $100,000 was awarded to Patrick Brown, M.D., to support his research in developing molecularly targeted therapies for childhood leukemia. With his research, Brown hopes to find out why infants with leukemia quickly become resistant to treatment and relapse.

Brian Ladle, Ph.D., a third year St. Baldrick’s Fellow, is receiving $97,500 in new funding to support his project that studies how newly approved cancer drugs that target the immune system can be combined with cancer vaccines to potentially improve their effectiveness against osteosarcoma, a childhood cancer of the bones.

“This is a crucial time in the pediatric cancer community, with new discoveries on the horizon, but limited funding to pursue scientific opportunities,” says Kathleen Ruddy, chief executive officer of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. “St. Baldrick’s is honored to fund these remarkable projects that are led by the brightest minds in the field, so that all kids will have a chance to live long, healthy lives.”

Since 2005, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has awarded more than $3 million in promising pediatric cancer research grants to Baltimore area hospitals.
